    Skull Base Tumors

Tumours of the base of the skull – combine a variety of formations localized in the anterior, middle and posterior cranial fossae. These include neurinoma, meningioma, fibroma, chondroma, honsarcoma, etc. The main method of treatment remains surgical, aimed at the maximum resection of the tumour tissue, determining the histological type of the tumour. The difficulty of surgical intervention for tumours of the base of the skull is determined by their localization in functionally significant and vital areas of the brain, often intimate adherence to stem structures (where the centres of regulation of respiration and cardiovascular activity are located), large vessels and cranial nerves.

In our Tel Aviv Medical Clinic, all operations for tumours of the base of the skull are carried out without fail under the control of neuronavigation and neurophysiological monitoring in order to prevent the appearance of a neurological deficit in the postoperative period. We use only innovative technologies and the most advanced equipment to treat diseases of the skull base. The latest diagnostic devices, effective and comprehensive medical procedures, professional specialists with considerable experience in conducting complex operations, are the key to successful disposal of the disease.

The successful treatment takes place thanks to multidisciplinary specialists – neurosurgeons, ophthalmologists, oncologists, endo surgeons, otoneurologists, physiotherapists. And of course, the most important step remains the diagnosis. It is the development of modern technologies that allows you to visualize the image of internal organs, to see the localization of pathology.

    Surgery

Currently, almost no hard-to-reach neoplasms remain due to the visualization of tumours of any localization. Sometimes it is not possible to completely remove the neoplasm, but the quality of life of the patient can be significantly improved. The main method for treating tumours of the base of the skull is surgical endoscopic surgery. If necessary, individual 3-and 4-dimensional implant models for the base of the skull are made.

If necessary, the base of the skull is reconstructed using muscle or fascial tissue, bone implants or artificial bone substitutes (for example, titanium mesh). As a rule, such operations are carried out with the joint participation of specialists in various fields. Patients with inoperable forms of malignant tumours are prescribed radiotherapy, in certain cases, combining it with chemotherapy.
