Gastrectomy
Throughout the world, gastric cancer is the leader in prevalence. The number of deaths does not give encouraging forecasts. To save the patient, doctors have to resort to a primary method – gastrectomy. This is a surgical operation in which the affected stomach completely removed and an esophageal-intestinal anastomosis placed in its place. That is, they connect artificially interrupted after resection messages between blood vessels, muscles, cavities. Gastrectomy is a necessary measure in the development of a malignant tumor, which leaves the digestive system intact. The operation lasts no more than three hours and depending on the location of the neoplasm and its stage. It has several types:
- With total gastrectomy, almost the entire organ removed.
- Extensive resection allows one to cut off two-thirds of the stomach.
- Economical, when the tumor has not yet grown significantly, is considered the most sparing, leaving most of the stomach.
- A combined gastrectomy performed in conjunction with resection of the esophagus or colon involved in the pathological process.
Indications for the operation
Several factors provoke the need for drastic measures:
- The last degree of obesity, in which a longitudinal resection made, which reduces the volume of the organ.
- Stomach cancer, when radiation and chemotherapy do not help prolong the patient’s life.
- Perforated ulcer. It creates a through-hole in the wall of the stomach, through which its contents enter the abdominal cavity.
- Multiple polyps dotted with the mucous membrane of the organ.
Contraindications
Severe and prolonged surgery involves deep anesthesia and the likelihood of bleeding. In this regard, there are several contraindications to this operation:
- Severe condition and old age of the patient.
- The presence of multiple metastases.
- Various serious pathologies – poor blood coagulation, problems of the cardiovascular system.
Gastrectomy Preparation
Before the operation, specialist consultations held to identify hidden diseases in the presence of which treatment prescribed. Also, the patient needs:
- Take blood and urine tests.
- Have an MRI and ultrasound scan.
- Do a biopsy, x-ray.
- Empty your stomach with an enema.
