Types of procedure
The technology of carrying out bone marrow or hematopoietic stem cells transplantation of peripheral blood involves intravenous introduction into the patient’s body previously taken from the donor or the patient himself and specially treated suspension of bone marrow or hematopoietic stem cells of peripheral blood. It is much less common, mainly in children, to use hematopoietic stem cells of umbilical cord blood. As a rule, the transplantation is preceded by intensive chemotherapy, the main purpose of which is to maximize the reduction of tumor cells and cells of the immune system.
Depending on the source of the transplanted cells, the following are isolated:
- Allogeneic bone marrow/peripheral blood stem hematopoietic cell transplantation.
- Autologous bone marrow/peripheral blood stem hematopoietic cell transplantation – the source of stem cells or bone marrow is the patient himself.
- Syngene bone marrow/peripheral blood stem hematopoietic cell transplantation, which is a type of allogeneic transplantation. The donor for syngene transplantation is the monozygous (genetically similar) twin of the patient.
