    Acoustic neuroma (vestibular schwannoma): an overview

    Initially, tumor formations of the schwannoma class attributed to damage to the auditory, cochlear nerves. The possibilities of modern histological studies have revealed the primary source of the formation of pathology – vestibular nerves. Acoustic neuroma is called vestibular schwannoma due to the defeat of Schwann cells. This is a benign neoplasm.

    Neuromas damage the protective membrane of nerve cells. It called – myelin. In the formation of myelin, Schwann cells play the role of building blocks. The development of schwannoma in any part of the body containing Schwann cells omitted.

    Structures located in the eighth cranial nerve classified as acoustic neuromas. The auditory nerve connects the brain to the ear canal.

    Overview: Acoustic Neuroma

    Acoustic neuromas of the auditory nerves have the following characteristics:

    • They are common – in ten percent of cases of tumor formations in the brain;
    • Individual symptomatology. Several patients, for a long time, do not feel discomfort. Other patients experience multiple symptoms progressing at a rapid pace;
    • Vestibular schwannoma is not characterized by metastasis to neighboring organs surrounding tissue. The probability of penetration of the formation into the area of the brain excluded;
    • With an increase in the dimensionality of the pathology, compression on the meninges noted;
    • With the development of intense pressure on the cerebellum area, the brain stem, there is a high probability of a violation of the vital function of a person;
    • The disease is characterized by slow growth. In rare cases, the neoplasm increases rapidly;
    • An advanced method for detecting acoustic neuroma is magnetic resonance imaging of the brain;
    • The primary symptoms of the disease affect auditory function. Patients complain of the appearance of ringing, noise in the ear canals, partial, complete hearing impairment of a one-sided order;
    • For the treatment of acoustic neuroma, the method of radiation therapy used, surgical excision of the formation.
